1985 Vanagon Westfalia – 5 Speed – All Original Paint, Body, and Interior – Subaru Engine

This 5-speed 1985 Westfalia is in gorgeous condition. We sold this van some years ago and the owners have taken incredible care of it.

This van is almost entirely original, with the only real exception being a Subaru Boxer engine swap. It feels excellent on the road – the engine sounds pleasant, the power is more than enough, and the clutch feels fresh. Sean advised it may be about time for a timing belt change – this can of course be done in-house at Transporter Werks. There’s just over 150k miles on the odometer, with under 20k on the engine since installation.

The white paint is all original. It’s not as glossy as a fresh coat, but the finish is still uniform across the whole van, and has next to no visible defects. The body is immaculate – I couldn’t find a dent anywhere. This van has aged incredibly.  

The interior is also all original. The cabinets appear untouched, all factory Westfalia amenities, and not a single crack in the dash or gauge pod. The matching door cards, seats and cushions are all in remarkable condition. There’s a nostalgic feeling stepping into the cabin. 

This is a truly clean example of how the Westie arrived from factory in 1985, with the addition of a practical engine upgrade.
